A toothsome dental office. . .

Dentists may differ in price, experience and technique, but one thing most of them seem to share is drab office space. So when Dr. Cheryl Bologna opened her new office last September in Dearborn, she was determined to make the space comfortable and inviting for patients - most of whom would rather not be there. "I wanted to make it more like a living room with warm colors and natural woodgrains," says Bologna, whose color inspiration derived from the decor of her own home.

The result is a waiting room that has the feel of a coffee shop, and dental chairs that are positioned to view a landscaped garden outside. Then there are the small details that make all the difference - a Michelangelo-inspired mural with a dental theme greets visitors in the foyer, custom-made lighting fixtures that look like giant dental mirrors line the hallway, vintage posters adorn the walls, and kids can watch cable TV on monitors at each station. And the waiting room includes a separate kids' area with toys and a magnetic wall.

Bologna also has a massage therapist in the office once a week to give patients head, neck and arm massages before their appointments.

Bologna, who's been in practice for 14 years, says dentists' offices have come a long way in the last 20 years, but that most of them still stick to a sterile black-and-white motif. "I wanted to make it more comfortable while still being sterile."
